Who We Are

Safety Beyond Borders (SBB) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to improving transportation safety outcomes in Nigeria and across Africa. We work with governments, transport operators, communities, schools, and civil society to reduce accidents, save lives, and strengthen transport safety governance.

Our Motivation

Africa records one of the highest rates of transportation-related accidents globally, particularly road traffic crashes. Many of these incidents are preventable through better policies, safer infrastructure, behavioral change, and enforcement. SBB was founded to confront these challenges holistically and sustainably.

Safety Beyond Borders (SBB) is one of Nigeria’s foremost non-governmental organizations advocating for road safety and safer transportation systems.

Inspired by the tragic loss of a friend Mr. Mufutau Atobatele in a road crash along Lokoja - Okene road, the organization began operations in 2000 under the name Safety Alliance, and later adopted the name Safety Beyond Borders to reflect an expanded scope of work and a broader continental and global outlook.

SBB has played a pioneering role in shaping Nigeria’s road safety advocacy landscape. In 2010, it was one of only two non-governmental organizations that served as founding members of the Nigeria Road Safety Partnership (NRSP)—a multi-stakeholder platform promoting collaboration among government, private sector, and civil society actors to improve road safety outcomes.

At the continental and global level, Safety Beyond Borders has been actively engaged in advancing road safety dialogue and cooperation. In 2006, SBB was among the select group of NGOs that convened in Brussels to discuss and contribute to the formation of the Global Alliance of Road Safety NGOs, further cementing its role as an early contributor to the global road safety movement.

Through strategic partnerships with organizations in Africa and beyond, Safety Beyond Borders continues to serve as a strong advocate for road safety globally, promoting best practices, policy reforms, and collaborative action across borders.

SBB has also demonstrated leadership through landmark initiatives. In 2004, the organization initiated Nigeria’s first Day for Remembering Road Crash Victims, bringing national attention to the human cost of road traffic crashes and honoring the lives lost.

In 2005, SBB introduced the African Road Safety Conference and Expo in Nigeria, providing a vital platform for policymakers, experts, civil society, and private sector stakeholders to share knowledge, showcase innovations, and strengthen Africa’s road safety agenda.

Today, Safety Beyond Borders remains committed to saving lives and advancing safer transportation systems through advocacy, education, research, capacity building, and partnerships across Nigeria, Africa, and the global community.
